Page 46 - Friendships Through the Years

One of the Club’s now regular ‘extraneous’ outings started in President Brian’s
year. Secretary Maurie Barnes and Keith McLennan jointly organized a trip to the Yarra
th
Glen Races after the May 12 meeting. Maurie obtained complimentary passes from the
Yarra Glen Club. At this outing twenty members and ladies enjoyed a picnic lunch in the
Member’s car park. They also enjoyed their “battle with the Bookies”. Nobody was too
successful at this, but the important thing about the day was that it was fine and sunny.
From that first meeting onward, the Yarra Glen Racing Club supplied
complimentary passes to the Lilydale Probus Club each year. However, the point of the
above reference to the weather is because at the next five meetings, the weather was
appalling – either wet, windy, too cold, or on one occasion, too hot. At those meetings the
majority of those present went home after two or three races.
As for guest speakers, three of our members took on this task. Carl Adamson did
a very good job when we were let down by a guest speaker who did not turn up. George
Sank and Ron
Lynch also spoke. Ralph Nichols (son of Pastor Sir Doug. Nichols) Administrator of
Worrowa Aboriginal College at Healesville, was a very interesting speaker. Phillip
Coffey (brother of our member, John Coffey) spoke on Lancaster Bombers.
There were no resignations or deaths in Brian’s year, and it finished with 48
members. It should be borne in mind that we had a foundation total membership of 23 at
the beginning of the year and 29 at the end of Stan’s year.
Treasurer Cedric Hordern presented the fourth financial report, showing a credit
balance of $215. Brian handed over to president-elect Bert Walker at the annual general
th
meeting on July 14 1988.
