CHAPTER SIX
PRESIDENT: BRIAN WALSH 1987 - 1988
Carl Adamson handed over to president-elect Brian Walsh at the fourth
annual general meeting after presenting a very comprehensive President’s
report. The meeting was followed by a light luncheon served and supplied
by the ladies.
It was mentioned in the previous chapter that one of the meetings at the Elderly
Citizen’s
Club was moved from the small billiard room to the main hall to hear Mrs. Adelaide de.
Souza speak on India and East Africa. Unfortunately we had to move back to the smaller
room after that meeting. One of the first items that the new President had to deal with was
to approach the Elderly Citizen’s committee to request that we use the main hall
permanently, or least during the warm weather. After some negotiations, Brian was
pleased to report that our future meetings would be held in the main room, perhaps a bit
colder and harder to hear in, but a big improvement on the other room. Definitely a
highlight for this presidential year!
It was also resolved that future donations to the Probus Centre – South Pacific be
based on $1 per head to a limit of $50. It was also resolved that the annual subscription
be $12 or $1 per month for a pro rata year, plus a joining fee of $4. Additionally, an
innovation was that Carl Adamson as Trips, Entertainment and Programs Officer,
reported that he was working on an itinerary for both trips and speakers for the next six
months.
An unusual item at one of the meetings, which caused a lot of comment and the
expenditure of time, was with regard to a letter received from the Electoral office at
Kilsyth. It subject was the legal liability of members of voluntary bodies. It was
considered that as a club we were not constituted as a voluntary service and as we were
an Incorporated body our members did not come into the sphere covered by the letter.
Two teams were entered in the fifth annual Probus bowls tournament. One team
was Jack Coffey, Ted Heeley, Keith McLennan and Max Rees. They won two games and
lost one at Auburn Heights. Carl Adamson, Maurie Barnes, Ron Lomas and Brian Walsh
made up the other team that played at Kew Bowling Club.
Harry and Rene Colquhoun were congratulated upon the celebration of their
Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Some of the outings in President Brian Walsh’s year were a coach trip to
Williamstown, where 45 people attended (5 were balloted out). There were also trips to
the R.A.A.F Museum at Point Cook, Melbourne Cricket Club and the Gallery of Sport,
including a luncheon in the M.C.C. Dining Room. The fifth annual Christmas luncheon
was held at the R.A.C.V. Healesville again, and 66 people attended. Additionally, three
interesting pictures at the Waverley Theatre were features that were well attended.
