The next meeting was also special. The 127 General meeting was held at the
th
Atheneum Theatre on Thursday 12 January 1995. This was the first meeting the Club
had held in January. As a special New Year gesture, President Arthur handed over
chairmanship of the meeting to president-elect, Geoff Paul, whilst Secretary, George
Sank, sat back and watched his Assistant Secretary, Del Trayler, perform in the
Secretary’s seat.

The 8 annual visit to the Yarra Glen races was held on 11 April 1994. The
weather was fine! However there was a very poor Probus attendance. Only Alistair
MacGregor, Jim Spiers, the Lillies and the McLennans were there.

The 8 annual car trip was to the Cadell County Motor Lodge, Moama, N.S.W.
st
from Monday 1 to Friday 5th of May 1995. Fifteen units were occupied. This was the
second time within three years that we had stayed at the same Motel. The members had
enjoyed the previous trip in 1993 so much that they decided to “repeat the dos e”.
The highlights of this trip were probably Jack and Aileen Coffey’s barbecue in a
park in Echuca, (they were becoming more and more proficient with their Probus
catering) and a drive to Deniliquin. It was cold, wet and windy. We organized a large box
of gourmet sandwiches that were eaten in a bandstand in a Deniliquin park, where we
obtained what shelter we could from a cold (and frequently wet) wind. We were still able
rd
to celebrate Carl Adamson’s 83 birthday – the wind blew the candles on the cake out
th
before Carl could! It was Carl’s wife Dorothy’s 84 birthday a couple of days later and
she joined with him in the fun (and cold). The highlights of the happy hour were a display
of old photos, Who am I? and a Quiz (teams of four)

The first City walk was held on Monday 27 March. Twenty-four members and
ladies caught a train to Flinders Street, and then walked along Swanston Street, hoping to
see Chloe at Young and Jackson’s Hotel, but, unfortunately, (or should that be
fortunately) Chloe doesn’t disrobe until 11.30 a.m. They then went into 3 Banks, the
National, the old Commercial Bank of Australia with magnificent ceilings, and the E.S.&
A. Bank (as it was originally known), now the A.N.Z. Bank. Further walking took them
to the Mitre Hotel in Bank Place, down Market Street past the old Customs Building,
over the river to Sheraton Towers Hotel, St. Johns Lutheran Church, and lunch in
Southgate Food Hall. After lunch some of the group went up the new Rialto Tower and
viewed Melbourne from a different angle. It was agreed that it was a different and
enjoyable day.

Graham Kenyon reported on the walk at the next meeting on 13 April and
indicated that further activities of this nature would be welcome. Indeed they were, as we
have now held six City, and later urban, walks.
Following the successful City walk, Keith McLennan suggested a Lake walk. On
th st
Monday 16 May 1995, the 1 annual Lake walk was held; 3l members and ladies
strolled, and some walked around the Lake at Lilydale. This was followed by morning
coffee at the Lake Community Centre (where the Club now holds it’s monthly meetings)
– ladies brought a plate. Brad Martin, Manager of the Shire’s Lake and Community
Centre, spoke on the history of the Lake and it’s future. The walk became an annual
affair, each (now) followed by a barbecue. Several have been Bush Walks, but not around
the Lake.
The O.E.R. annual picnic to the Maroondah Dam (previously to Silvan Dam) on
th
29 March was well attended by a number of local clubs and was very enjoyable.
