The Probus Club of Lilydale. Inc was originally formed 2nd. June 1983 as a men’s Probus Club, then reconstituted on 12th. December 2013 as a combined club. The Probus Club of Lilydale. Inc is a highly active organisation with approximately one hundred members. Members meet on the second Thursday of each month at Lillydale Lake Community Room, (Pictured above), Lillydale Lake, Lilydale, VIC 3140 at 9.30 AM , and the meeting is followed by a guest speaker. (Its worth noting that the suburb spelling is “Lilydale” and the lake from the original name of the shire should be “Lillydale”). The meeting concludes approximately 12 noon, and is often followed by lunch at a local venue. Club details: |

All Probus Clubs come about because one or members of an existing Rotary Club decide to start it and, most importantly, that Rotary follow the proposal through until the club is up and running with people properly qualified to administer a Probus Club. In the case of our Club, Syd Koehrer and Jim Thompson put forward a motion to the Rotary Club of Lilydale on the 12th of April 1983 that “$250 be advanced to form a Probus Club in Lilydale”. The inaugural Probus interest meeting was held on the 2nd June 1983 and it was moved and seconded that “the formation of a Probus Club of Lilydale go ahead”. Many locals were responsible in setting up the club. However it would be very remiss not to name just a few in alphabetical order. Messrs Syd Koehrer, Keith McLennan, Stan Moser, Derek Reeve-Cox, Bob Shellard and Jim Thompson. Stan Moser was our Foundation President. Total membership that first year was 23. In the early years meetings were held at three different venues, the Lilydale Uniting Church Hall, the Senior Citizen’s Club and the Athenaeum Theatre, “until finally settling down at our present venue”. Unlike most Probus Men’s Clubs, from the very start it was agreed that although a “Men’s” club our ladies would be welcome to attend all meetings, and take a full part in all affairs except only that they could not vote. Indeed, the participation of the ladies has always been one of the strengths of the Club. The Club caters for many tastes other than attending meetings and hearing speakers, and these may be seen on activities. We acknowledge the book, ”Friendship Through the Years” which is a valuable source of information written by a Foundation Member Keith McLennan. |
